Leigh Sheppard is the mom of beautiful twins that entered this world as preemies. She shares her thoughts about Prematurity Awareness Day and her hopes for others traveling this path.
Our twins were born extremely prematurely. Combined, they weighed 2 lbs 12 oz at birth. They were born at 24 weeks and 2 days gestation, barely considered a viable pregnancy. Today, they are almost three years old and are a joyous handful. I believe that they are where they are today because of prayer, their doctors and nurses, and the guidance of parents who had gone through this trial before us. Prematurity was not a word that I was familiar with before our twins were born, and there are a lot of things that I know now that I was blissfully unaware of before. Our experience has been hard, but it has also been amazing. They say that the NICU is a roller coaster, and it does not stop when you leave. There are plenty more high points now, but the lows can be really low. Prematurity is something that affects our lives everyday and hopefully this month can help others be aware of the resources available to the families of infants born prematurely.
