Family Support for Fragile Beginnings

’Tis the season – RSV season

October 31, 2019 by Lisa Grubbs Leave a Comment

While National RSV Awareness Month is observed in October, it is important to remember that depending on where you live RSV season begins as early as October and goes through the month of April.

RSV, or Respiratory Syncytial Virus, is a common, but dangerous virus that infects the respiratory tract of most children before they turn two years of age. RSV is also very contagious. For the majority of those who get RSV, it is nothing more than a cold. But for babies born prematurely, or those under age 2 born with heart or lung disease, or with a weakened immune system it can be the cause of rehospitalization. It can also be life-threatening.

Our friends at the National Perinatal Association have put together two great resources for parents about RSV – how to protect your child and what to watch for and know this RSV season.

We encourage you to talk to your child’s healthcare provider about the best ways to protect your children during RSV season as well.
